TITHES in CHRISTIANITY.

Most Christians know that ABRAHAM gave one tenth to MELCHISEDEC, who according to HEBREWS Ch.6 is the forerunner of Christ. So the percentage is mentioned as 10% of the INCREASE of every Christian. The percentage is not in doubt.

The Levites were given this Tithe as they were not given any portion of land in the land of Canaan, like the rest of the 12 tribes (Joseph had 2 tribes Ephraim & Manasseh, therefore totally 13 tribes) as they were not to indulge in labour, in common parlance that could be called as profitable.

The order changed with the advent of Christianity, as non-jews who did not belong to the Tribe system, took up to either spreading the Gospel or became a part of the Church. Therefore the Priests and the Church have replaced the tribe of LEVI.

BUT THE MOOT POINT IS WHETHER IT WAS THE COMMANDMENT OF GOD TO HAND OVER THE TITHES TO THE CHURCH/PRIESTS OR IS IT TO BE APPORTIONED AMONG OTHERS, AS WELL?

The Bible at Deuteronomy Ch.26 talks of the principle of Tithing. An excerpt of the verses 12 & 13 are reproduced here below:-

26:12 When thou hast made an end of tithing all the tithes of thine increase the third year, which is the year of tithing, and hast given it unto the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, that they may eat within thy gates, and be filled;

26:13 Then thou shalt say before the LORD thy God, I have brought away the hallowed things out of mine house, and also have given them unto the Levite, and unto the stranger, to the fatherless, and to the widow, according to all thy commandments which thou hast commanded me: I have not transgressed thy commandments, neither have I forgotten them.

There is a mention of THREE other category of persons, which are STRANGERS, WIDOWS & FATHERLESS.

The STRANGERS, WIDOWS & FATHERLESS form the vulnerable section of the society and we know from the Bible that PERSONS HAVE ENTERTAINED ANGELS BY ENTERTAINING STRANGERS; the praiseworthy act of the WIDOW who dropped a mite in the offertory and Jesus’ love for Children and their INNOCENCE.

By the new law, since Levites are not the natural priests under Christianity, the Levites have been left out and the Christian Church and Christian Priests have been included. But the Social aspect of the STRANGERS, WIDOWS & FATHERLESS, have NOT BEEN EXCLUDED by Jesus or his DIRECT DISCIPLES. They ought to be included in the process of TITHING.

Unfortunately, the following passage from MALACHI 3:10 has been used by priests to excite the GREED and enforce a false sense of DUTY on the Christians:-

MALACHI 3:10

Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

The passage from MALACHI has consequently UPSTAGED the COMMANDMENT of God thru MOSES, on the grounds of GREED and FALSE DUTY.

Jesus’ law and the prophet condensation is LOVE YOUR GOD & NEIGHBOUR.

The NEIGHBOUR includes, a supportless widow, a helpless stranger and a fatherless child in need. Therefore these OUGHT TO BE PROVIDED FOR OUT OF THE TITHES.

To hand over 10% of a person’s increase entirely to the Church/Priest may lead to Man’s irresponsibility towards his NEIGHBOUR. As a Christian, it is MY DUTY TO APPORTION THE TITHE for all the four purposes and distribute it in a way that God gives me the mind to give.

The Church and the Priests have hijacked Deuteronomy 26 at the gun point of Malachi 3:10.

It is time that we honoured God and took up our Social Responsibilities and discharged them directly without delegating them in the hands of persons who might be like ELI and his sons.

Let me also make a pertinent point that the commandments of God thru Moses holds good even today, unless over-ruled by Jesus explicitly (like when Jesus says about Divorce “the law says….but I say unto u..” etc.

FEEL THE POWER OF GIVING BY GIVING TO THOSE WHO YOU FIND THEMSELVES HELPLESS & NEEDY.

GOD WANTS YOU NOT ONLY TO GIVE, BUT ALSO WANTS YOU TO FEEL GOOD ABOUT YOUR GIVING.

  1. Abraham’s tithes in Genesis 14:20 were not holy tithes at all, but were pagan spoils of war. Arab tradition required Abram to give 10% of spoils of war to his local priest-king. The Law only required one per cent (1%) from spoils of war in Numbers 31.

Although money was common in Genesis and essential for sanctuary worship, money is never included in 16 texts which define the contentts of the tithe. True tithes were only food miraculously incrxeased by God from inside Israel.

The Law in Numbers 18:21-24 (Neh 10:37b) commanded the people to give the first Levitical tithe to the Levite servants to the priests. The Levites then gave a tenth of their tenth to the priests (Num 18:25-28; Neh 10:38-39). In exchange for receiving the tithe netither Levites nor priests were allowed to own or inherit property (Num 18:20-29). However they did farm and raise the tithed animlas they received and learn trades for temple maintence (Num 3, Num 35; Josh 20-21; 3 Kings 23 -27).

The OT temple and priesthood were both replaced by the indweling temple of the Holy Spirit and the priesthodo of every beleiver (1 Pet 2:0; 1 Cor 6:19). The NT gospel workers are new offices not patterned after the old.

While the Roman Catholic Church is the only one which does not allow its pastors to own or inherit property, there is still no NT command to the Church after Calvary to collect tithes.
There were three different ttihes in the OT totalling 23 1/3rd per cent: (1) the Levitical tithe of 10% which was brought to the Levitical cities (Neh 10:37b) and some to the Temple. (2) The second festival tithe was eaten in the streets of Jerusalem by everybody and (3) the third year poor tithe was kept in the towns and home and shared with the poor (Deu 26:12-13).

Yes. Yes. Yes. The Church has hijacked all giving texts at the gun point of Malachi 3:10.

I disagree about your statement that tithing is for today. Unlike tithing Christian giving is primarily sacrificial and it is also freewill, generous, joyful, not by commandment or perdcentage and motivated by love for God and otherss (2 Cor 8 & 9). Sacrificial givng means more than 10% for many but it does not condemn those who cannot give as much who still give sacrificially.

The Law commanded that all who broke the first six commandments should be put to death. That includes disobhedient childen from Exodus 21. My principle is opposite from yours: That part of the Law which pertains to Christians has been repeated after Calvary to the Church in terms of grace and fatih.

Yes. GOD WANTS YOU NOT ONLY TO GIVE, BUT ALSO WANTS YOU TO FEEL GOOD ABOUT YOUR GIVING. Thanks for the article.

  2. Hi Kelly,
Thanks for the comment and it was a pleasure reading it. I am overwhelmed that somebody erudite feels the same way about the verse at Malachi 3:10 being used to hijack the Commands of God. Thank you again, yet i am unable to agree with your statement that
“not by commandment or perdcentage and motivated by love for God and otherss (2 Cor 8 & 9)”.
You have buttressed your stand based on the epistle of Paul, he was a greaat apostle and worthy of reverence, but when confronted vis-a-vis a passage from the Gospel of Matthew, the epistle has to step aside and make way for Jesus’ utterances, which run as follows:

Matthew 23:23 (KJV) Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

Luk 11:42 But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

“….these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone” portion according to me has the effect of Jesus instructing that one should follow the commandments in tithing.

If u have an opinion on this i shall be delighted to hear from u. Thanks.

I agreed totally with Kelly. In Mat,23:23 and Luk 11:42,Jesus was speaking to the Pharisees,Jews under the Law of tithing, and all the rest of the Law of Moses,He was not speaking to today’s Christians.Today’s Chistians ARE NOT under the LAW,but under GRACE.Pastors today want to keep Christians under the Law of tithing by telling them that if they don’t tithe they are robbing GOD;it was not Chistians who were robbing God,it the jews, the whole nation of ISRAEL that was robbing God,not the United States Christians;we are under grace, and if Christians live keeping Moses Law then they have fallen from grace. It is convenient for preachers to preach Mal.3:10 After all who in the right mind wants to robb God. Read ALL three chap. of Mal.3:10 and see how God cursed the the priests for not traching properly what God had told them to teach.
